JA South Africa: Empowering Young People. Strengthening Communities. Transforming Systems
For over four decades, JA South Africa has worked at the intersection of education, economic development, and workforce readiness, building partnerships that enable young people not only to participate in the economy but to shape it. Established in 1979 and affiliated with the global JA Worldwide network since 2001, JA South Africa is a catalyst for systemic change, bringing together diverse stakeholders to create pathways that prepare young people to thrive in an evolving world of work.
Rather than viewing young people as beneficiaries of isolated programs, we see them as future entrepreneurs, innovators, employees, and community leaders. Our role is to strengthen the ecosystem around them by connecting schools, employers, investors, government, higher education institutions, and communities in ways that create sustainable opportunities long after a program has ended.
Our experiential learning model equips young people with entrepreneurial capability, financial health, digital fluency, work readiness, and leadership skills while fostering the adaptability, resilience, and confidence needed to navigate an increasingly complex economy. Our programs are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and endorsed by the South African Department of Basic Education, ensuring both local relevance and global best practice.
Building an Integrated Youth Development Ecosystem
JA South Africa delivers a continuum of learning opportunities that support young people at every stage of their development while strengthening the systems that enable long term economic participation.
Primary School Programs cultivate entrepreneurial thinking, financial capability, and problem solving from an early age, helping learners develop the mindset needed for lifelong learning and economic participation.
High School Programs, including our flagship JA Company Program, immerse Grade 10 and 11 learners in creating and operating real businesses while developing entrepreneurial, financial, digital, and leadership competencies that prepare them for higher education, employment, and enterprise.
Out of School Youth Programs, including the Youth Enterprise Development Program (YEDP), JA Digital Entrepreneurship Education Platform (JA DEEP), Entrepreneurship Accelerator Program, and the JA Social Equity Program, provide entrepreneurship development, business incubation, mentoring, employability skills, digital learning, and access to networks that improve pathways to sustainable livelihoods.
Together, these programs form an interconnected pipeline that enables young people to transition successfully from learning to earning while contributing to stronger local economies.
Partnering for Lasting Systems Change
Transforming youth outcomes requires more than funding programs. It requires investing in the systems that create opportunity.
JA South Africa partners with businesses, foundations, government, educational institutions, and development organizations to co design solutions that address the root causes of youth unemployment and economic exclusion. Our partnerships leverage collective expertise, shared resources, and evidence based approaches to achieve sustainable impact at scale.
Partners can work with JA South Africa by:
Investing in long term youth development strategies that strengthen education to employment pathways.Co creating innovative solutions that respond to future workforce and entrepreneurship needs.
Mobilizing employee volunteers and mentors who provide practical guidance and industry insight.
Supporting digital learning, entrepreneurship ecosystems, and fi nancial capability initiatives.
Collaborating on research, measurement, and evidence generation that informs policy and improves practice.
Expanding opportunities for underserved communities through collective investment and shared accountability.
Our approach moves beyond transactional funding relationships toward strategic partnerships focused on measurable, systemic outcomes that benefit young people, communities, and the broader economy.
