Cape Town ranked world’s second-best beach destination for adventure seekers
Cape Town has been ranked the second-best beach destination in the world for travellers looking for more than a traditional seaside holiday.
The ranking comes from a new study by cruise operator Sail Croatia, which analysed more than 40 coastal destinations worldwide to identify beach escapes that offer a wide range of experiences beyond lounging on the sand.
While Italy’s Sardinia claimed the top spot overall, Cape Town stood out as one of the world’s leading destinations for adventure, nature and day-trip experiences, earning an overall score of 93.97 out of 100.
The Mother City was particularly recognised for its wealth of outdoor activities. According to the study, Cape Town offers nearly 700 adventure and extreme sports experiences, the highest number among the destinations analysed.
Visitors can spend a morning paragliding from Signal Hill or Lion’s Head, head out on a shark cage diving excursion along the coast, or take to the waters of Table Bay for kitesurfing and other ocean-based adventures. For travellers who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, there are countless hiking routes, mountain biking trails and scenic drives to explore.
Cape Town also ranked highly for the variety of experiences available beyond its beaches. The study identified more than 1,400 nearby day trips and excursions, ranging from visits to the Cape Winelands and historic towns to wildlife encounters and coastal attractions.
Nature lovers are particularly spoiled for choice. More than 850 nature and wildlife experiences are available in and around the city, offering opportunities to spot African penguins, whales, dolphins and an array of birdlife. Visitors can also enjoy game-viewing experiences without travelling far from the coast, making Cape Town one of the few beach destinations where ocean adventures and wildlife encounters can be combined in a single trip.
The research examined a range of travel factors, including the number of beaches, adventure activities, historical attractions, wildlife tours, dining options and excursions available at each destination. Locations were then given a score out of 100 based on the variety of experiences on offer beyond sunbathing.
Although Sardinia secured first place thanks to its vast number of beaches and cultural attractions, Cape Town’s strong performance highlights its appeal as a destination where travellers can pack multiple experiences into a single holiday.
The city’s combination of mountains, coastline, wildlife, food, wine and adventure continues to set it apart from many traditional beach destinations around the world.
